How to use a Tibetan singing bowl in just 7 minutes?

Are you suffering from stress and anxiety? You also wanna get rid of this hectic life? You are in the right place. I’ll not recommend medicines because I have a better option for you. I’m gonna tell you today about Tibetan Singing Bowl meditation.

How to Use Tibetan Singing Bowls?

Now get ready to learn different ways to play a singing bowl.

Mallet revolving around the rim

The first way is to play with it in your hand, or you can also place it on a flat surface. Then start moving the mallet in a circular motion against the bowl’s rim. When the mallet touches the singing bowl, it produces vibrations that create sound. You will experience a very relaxing sound that will pull off all the stress from your body, mind, and soul.

The good news for the readers about Tibetan Singing Bowl is that anyone can play it. There is no need for experience or training. Your patience will make you a perfectionist. When I first started playing my singing bowl. It was problematic for me. But now I’ve gotten better.

Hit the Mallet with the Bowl

Another way is just to hit the bowl. After you hit the bowl, you’ll hear a sound like “tonggggg” and then rotate the mallet around the rim. You can do it with the exact instructions given above. You could feel like vibrations are striking with the “tonggggg” that was produced before.

After having this therapy, you’ll feel like your anger and depression are all gone. If the bowl is in your hand, then try to avoid your fingers touching the bowl.

Lie on the Floor with Different Bowls

It is a different way. Just lie down on the floor. Then set different bowls of different sizes in different places around you or on your body. To perform this therapy, two people are required: a person who is receiving therapy and another person who will be striking the bowl.

You can hit different bowls one by one or move the mallet in a circular motion against the bowl’s rim. When it starts playing in a rich and clear tone, you can slow down the motion. Use your whole arm instead of rotating your wrist.

Singing Bowl with Water

Let’s move to another method that is my favorite one. You have to put water inside the bowl. One thing that you need to remember is not to pour your bowl fully. Just fill it with half of its capacity. Otherwise, it will be difficult for you to play. Then start revolving the mallet around the rim.

You’ll experience a very magical sound. It seems like droplets are dancing inside the bowl. The sound feels like the sound of rain. After having this peaceful therapy, not only your body feels satisfaction but your soul also. It is more than fun. It is therapeutic.

According to WebMD, “A review of the research on music therapy published in the 1999 issue of the Annual Review of Nursing Research concludes that music is an effective pain reducer and performance and mood enhancer”.

Do all bowls produce the same sounds?

how to use a sound bowl

Different sizes and shapes of singing bowls have different sounds because it brings different vibrations. The bowls’ sound also depends on the material the bowls are made of and whether they are hand-hammered or machine-finished.

According to Mitchell Gaynor, M.D., “You can look at disease as a form of disharmony. And there’s no organ system in the body’s not affected by sound and music and vibration”.

It is necessary to use the accurate size of the mallet with the bowl. Once I used the wrong mallet. My bowl was quite big, but the mallet was very small. At that time, I was not able to play. I hope you won’t repeat these mistakes.

Bowls can be of different materials. You may have a crystal, metal, or some other material bowl. I have both bowls. There is not too much difference but a little bit of variation in the vibrations and sounds. I think crystal bowls have many clear nodes. A crystal singing bowl is also used to clear and recharge your chakras.

In Boston, Dr. Michael Grodin has been using Tibetan Singing Bowls to relieve post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How does the singing bowl work?

As we all know, Physics exists in this world. It happens because of physics. The sound and vibrations are created by striking the bowl with the mallet.

It’s not proven scientifically, but a wealth of anecdotal evidence indicates that the singing bowl tones have positive physical, emotional, and mental effects on the person who hears them.

Once Mehtab Benton said, “In sound, we are born, in sound, we are healed.”

Why my Singing Bowl doesn’t work?

Are you struggling to get your Tibetan singing bowl to sing? I’m going to talk about four reasons why this might be happening and how to get it to work. So this is a very common issue when it comes to Tibetan singing bowls. Especially when you’re just a beginner, and that’s why I wanted to help you to better understand it and get that bowl singing.

· Hairline Fracture

The first reason why your Tibetan singing bowl may not be singing is that it’s got a hairline fracture or a crack in it. Now, of the four reasons, this will be the most unlikely, but it is possible. If it’s dropped very hard or hit very hard onto any objects, the singing bowls could crack.

· Wrong Striker

Reason number two is you may not be using the right striker for the right bowl. Now, if you’re using a striker that is too large for the small bowl, then it’s going to be very difficult for the bowl to sing, and the same goes if you’ve got quite a large bowl.

To fix it, you want a striker that creates the right amount of friction around the bowl to enable it to sing.

· Holding the Bowl Incorrectly

Reason number three of why your bowl may not be singing is you’re holding it incorrectly. We will need to keep in mind that when we’re playing the bowl, you do not want to be putting your fingers on the sides at all. Your hand should be flat and not cupping it. You must be holding the base only.

· Wrong Technique

Reason four is the technique that you’re using now. When you’re playing your bowl, you want to use your full arm motion. I noticed a lot of people where they go wrong they’re just flicking the wrist.

It’s just really difficult because basically, when you’re just flicking your wrist, the striker is on an incorrect angle, and we do want the striker to be reasonably parallel with the sides of the bowl.

How to clean a Tibetan Singing Bowl?

Some readers may have this bowl, or some are maybe thinking of buying this bowl. This question will arise in your mind. How to clean this bowl? Don’t use harsh fabric for its cleansing. Take a soft cloth and wipe the bowl with it.

You can also use a non-acidic disinfecting cleaning agent. For this reason, if you find solid stains on the bowl. Keep in mind that it is not a bowl in which you can have your lunch or dinner. So don’t even try to put it in a dishwasher.

Who should not use a Tibetan singing bowl?

The primary condition where we should restrict access to singing bowl meditation in pregnancy, particularly during the initial 12 weeks. Additionally, when we have a fever, serious irritation, and fresh injuries, we shouldn’t utilize a singing bowl.

If the singing bowl is affecting you negatively, try to reduce the time duration of your meditation to a maximum of five to ten minutes a day. I used to play with my singing bowls for five minutes just before going to bed at night. It has helped me to get relief from the stress and sound sleep.

My name is Sophie Brown. My interest in mindfulness began in 2001 when I was diagnosed with an aggressive early form of breast cancer and in addition to conventional therapy, I discovered more ways to heal it naturally through diet and lifestyle. Since then, I have practiced meditation on and off throughout my adult life, and it has proven to be a constant source of strength and grounding in my life. Currently, I live in Oregon with my husband and our three teenage kids, where I meditate, eat vegan food, write, run, and read. Thank you for reading my articles!
